The Scottsdale Institute’s eighth annual Membership Conference was held
at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 4-6, 2001. A record number
of attendees heard a variety of speakers and topics ranging from Bill Dwyer’s
compelling look at how pharmaceuticals and genomics is changing medicine
to Don Wegmiller’s richly detailed talk on the state of the industry. Feedback
from last year’s conference indicated a desire for more discussion and fewer
presentations. As a result, this year we encouraged an open discussion
format for lively exchange among the participants. While space does not
permit us to publish comprehensive proceedings of the conference—out
of necessity, some very good discussions were left on the editing room
floor—this IE report tries to summarize highlights for our busy executives
