Healthcare Information Exchange: Making the Dream of Data Exchange a Reality

June 23, 2011, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm CDT

Mark Allphin, Research Director, KLAS, Orem, UT. With healthcare systems and government initiatives focusing more tightly on improved patient care at lower cost through increased technology utilization and complex data sharing, many providers wonder how real the dream of healthcare information exchange (HIE) truly is. For this discussion Mark examines recent KLAS findings from discussions with facilities about their HIEs to uncover the type and scope of information being exchanged, how clinicians are accessing the data, HIE funding sources, and the percent of data being exchanged through HL7 and CCD/CCR, among other systems. Additionally, providers shared their HIE success measurements, their perceptions of the HIE components that vendors offer, their go-forward strategies, and industry trends that are emerging from this hotbed of activity and industry change.
