Predictive Modeling:  Hypoglycemia Study

February 27, 2020, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm CST

Michael Weiner MD, MPHMichael Weiner, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, Associate Director, Regenstrief Institute, Inc., and Director, HSR&D Center for Health information and Communication, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Hypoglycemia causes symptoms including cognitive impairment, but important contributors, such as intake of food and medications, are difficult to measure. Wearable devices provide an opportunity to improve resolution of measurement and feedback to patients and their primary care management teams about how to lower the risk of hypoglycemia. This presentation discusses statistical modeling that identified the magnitude of risk factors for hypoglycemia, and discusses a pilot study, involving continuous glucometers and other wearable devices, designed to improve short-term prediction of glucose levels among urban older adults with diabetes. Implications for medical practices are also discussed.
