Associate Dean for Population Health & Health Outcomes, Fairbanks School of Public Health, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis

Bill Tierney is Associate Dean for Population Health & Health Outcomes at Indiana University’s Fairbanks School of Public Health where he is chief liaison with the diverse public health, healthcare delivery systems, other university schools—especially the Indiana University School of Medicine—and other health care stakeholders in Central Indiana, especially its safety net providers. Bill is internationally recognized for his research in biomedical informatics, health services, and clinical database epidemiology.

From 2015-2020, he was the founding chair of the Department of Population Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. The department is playing a leading role in Dell medical school’s mission to help make Austin a model healthy city, focusing on community engagement, health equity, primary care, occupational health, health information and data analytic sciences, and global health. During his time in Austin, Bill also co-founded Population Health Leaders in Academic Medicine, a national organization of leaders of departments, divisions, institutes, centers, and schools of population health.

He spent the prior 36 years at Indiana University and the Regenstrief Institute where he helped lead the implementation and study of electronic medical records and other health information technologies. In 2010, he assumed the roles of president and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute, associate Dean for Comparative Effectiveness Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine, and chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine for Eskenazi health, the nation’s fourth largest safety net health system, where he practiced for more than 35 years as a primary care physician, emergency physician and hospitalist. Bill is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a Master of the American College of Physicians, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physician–London and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. His is also a Fellow in the American College of Medical Informatics and its immediate past-president.
