Karthik serves as SVP-Analytics and Chief Data Science Officer for Ascension and leads the Ascension Data Science Institute (ADSI); a uniquely skilled, high-performing team of analysts, data scientists and actuaries that will develop analyses, models and applications and aid in the strategic decision making  process to support Ascension’s strategic priorities. This includes optimizing Ascension’s operations; enhancing its footprint; improving patient quality, safety and experience; reinvigorating focus on all Ascension Medical Group (AMG) patients; and improving population health – while continuing to grow the number of managed lives and getting paid appropriately for the risk under management. The team also works closely with the clinical and nursing research leaders to provide study design, biostatistics and epidemiology expertise to establish Ascension as a leading research organization and a “learning health system.”

As the Chief Data Science Officer, Karthik is responsible for developing the foundation of people, process and technology needed for an industry-leading Data Science COE – to ensure Ascension derives value from connecting the immense amount of data available – billing, claims, clinical, patient reported and Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) and putting it to use for better healthcare for the patients, members, consumers and community. The COE provides machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to enable the vertical functions to drive business outcomes.

Karthik is passionate about healthcare and the opportunity to improve health equity especially for the most vulnerable populations. Prior to Ascension, he spent over 15 years in the healthcare industry working with employers on benefits management, growing private Retiree and Active Health Exchanges in partnership with payors and building highly scalable data and analytic platforms for population health management. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bangalore University and a dual Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research.

Karthik serves as the Vice-President on the board of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago. He lives with his family in the suburbs of Chicago and loves to play racket sports and is inspired by the different cultures he sees in his travels and capturing it through photography.
