Machine Learning Algorithms for Disease Detection: Implementing AI into Radiology Workflow

November 19, 2019, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm CST

Warren B. Gefter, MD, Professor of Radiology, Penn Medicine, and William Boonn, MD, CMIO, Nuance.  With November being Lung Cancer Awareness month, Drs. Gefter and Boonn discuss Penn Medicine’s work with developers, radiologists, and scientists to incorporate deep learning algorithms that automate the detection, measurement, characterization and reporting of lung nodules on chest CT scans into radiology workflow.  While there has been much excitement devoted to the development of AI algorithms for detection of disease in medical imaging, there has been little focus on how they will be deployed and incorporated into the radiologist’s image interpretation process in a manner that is efficient and unobtrusive, while still leveraging the benefits that AI can provide. They also illustrate new AI-augmented workflow scenarios to enhance and automate lung nodule detection, measurement and characterization.
