As Ling Chu, MD, Associate CMIO at UT Southwestern and David Wetherhold, MD, CMIO at Scripps Health discussed at the SI Clinical Informatics Summit, theft of provider identity is a growing concern. Recently, David was alerted to suspicious controlled substance refill attempts using a colleague’s details. Fortunately, the pharmacist noticed the provider’s phone number didn’t match previous records and the attempts were blocked.
Ling later experienced a similar situation, and thanks to David’s advice, was able to quickly act and involve her legal and compliance teams. It was determined that the prescriptions had been created by a small, cloud-based EMR in a two-provider practice near Phoenix and the electronic prescriber ID (EPID) had been created recently with a stolen identity.
