Ben Pennell, PharmD, MS, BCPS is currently the manager of pharmacy operations at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Pennell provides leadership and operational oversight for the medication distribution system which serves the 1,000-bed hospital as well as overseeing the bulk of controlled substance distribution and ambulatory care clinic medication distribution.
He is originally from North Carolina where he completed his undergraduate studies and received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a two-year health system pharmacy administration residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center while also earning a master’s degree from The Ohio State College of Pharmacy.
During his time at Massachusetts General Hospital he has been involved in projects related to safety and security of medications including the implementation of Controlled Substance Manager in the central pharmacy and the conversion of over 260 automated dispensing cabinets from Omnicell’s G4 version to XT. He is also involved in numerous committees some of which include the Drug Diversion Task Force, Preventing Pediatric Medication Errors Committee, Neonatal Medication Safety, and Adult and Pediatric Code and Emergency Response Committees.
