Carleen Penoza, MHSA, BSN, RN

Carleen is the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer for Michigan Medicine-University of Michigan. In her role, Carleen develops clinical system and technology strategies in collaboration with other senior nursing, clinical informatics, IT, and operational leaders.  She is responsible for ensuring quality improvement efforts promote informatics research, align with regulatory bodies and guidelines, and include evidence based practice that supports positive clinical outcomes.  Carleen’s focus is to implement, improve, and simplify the technological work that clinical RNs must do, so that the care they provide to their patients is safer and more efficient.

Carleen has been with Michigan Medicine since 2015, having progressive roles of inpatient applications director and interim senior director of clinical and operational applications. Prior to joining Michigan Medicine, Carleen worked at Beaumont Health, with roles including clinical and managerial experience in the pediatric intensive unit, as well as progressive leadership roles in clinical informatics and information technology.

Carleen earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan.  She is a clinical adjunct faculty member of the University of Michigan School of Nursing.  She is a member of the Michigan Organization of Nurse Leaders, and represents this organization on the Health Information Technology Strategy Committee of the Michigan Health and Hospitals Association.  She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau and Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
