Karen Amstutz, MD

VP of Community Health, IU Health

Karen Amstutz, MD, joined IU Health in April 2019 as vice president of Community Health.   In this role, Amstutz is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating IU Health’s community health programs, with an emphasis on achieving the goals of reducing infant mortality, smoking and obesity in Indiana and increasing behavioral health services.

Amstutz previously served as chief medical officer for Magellan Health, a Fortune 500 company specializing in medical and behavioral health services for complex and special populations. She and her team developed the company’s medical and clinical strategies and policies, as well as its clinical models, to deliver the best care and clinical outcomes.

Before joining Magellan, Amstutz served in leadership positions with Evolent Health, xG Health Solutions, WellPoint, and as the founding medical director for MDwise. She has extensive strategic and operational experience as a health plan physician executive serving Medicare, Medicaid and commercial patients and consumers.

Amstutz has a medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, an MBA from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Indiana University. She trained in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and is board-certified in pediatrics.

She currently serves on the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality, chairs the National Quality Partners Action Team on Serious Mental Illness and is co-course director for the MD/MBA Forum at the IU School of Medicine.
